The sun shone again on the Longhouse project today!
Spirits were high as we removed thermal layers and waterproofs and got down to some un-impeded work.
Several mortise and tenon posts were nearing completion- although the final adjustments always take longer than expected.
The morning saw a rush of posts in position, starting with an earthbound post and followed by Astra’s mortise and tenon post to form the second corner of the western end of the building. Astra has had the unenviable task of producing a 9 inch deep mortise through an incredibly tough sill beam of Holm Oak – well done!
Next we placed post 10 into it’s post hole. By far the heaviest wall post, this monster took serious team work and strategy to complete. Just before lunch, Bill’s beautifully jointed post went into the sill beam with a slight pause on the way in. I think we could all hear Bill’s heart pounding as it stuck momentarily! But what a fit!
The afternoon saw us place two more earthbound posts and continue on more mortises.
What a great day and what an achievement! 6 posts in!
End of day 4. 12 posts positioned.
